There are lots of pharmaceutical processing techniques for <em>Swarna makshika<\/em> are described in literature of Rasa Shastra (Indian alchemy\/ pharmaceutics). \u00a0The <em>bhasma<\/em> of said material is prepared in two steps i.e. <em>shodhana and marana<\/em>.\u00a0 For both processes several techniques like\u00a0 roasting, heating &amp; quenching etc. for shodhana and <em>puta<\/em> system of heating, <em>kupipakwa<\/em> mode of heating etc. for <em>marana<\/em> are available by using different auxiliary materials (i.e. other than [SM]).\u00a0 Lemon juice as ancillary material for both <em>shodhana<\/em> and <em>marana<\/em>, roasting technique for <em>shodhana<\/em> and puta system of heating for <em>marana<\/em> are frequently used for [SM].\u00a0 Quality controls for <em>bhasmas<\/em> are well described in classical texts in very systematic manner, covering all aspects to assess the <em>bhasma<\/em> physic-chemically. \u00a0The naked eye, favorable observations for <em>bhasma Pariksha<\/em> in Rasa Shastra is hallmark of its confirmation for clinical practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pharmaceutical Processing\u2019s of Swarna Makshika<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Shodhana<\/em> of <em>Swarna M<\/em><em>akshika<\/em><sup>\u00a0<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Roasting with frequent addition of lemon juice<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials and Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Raw materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Raw<em> Swarna Makshika<\/em> (Procured from the Ayurvedic Pharmacy, I.M.S, BHU)<\/p>\n<p>Lemon juice (lemon is procured from the market and juice is extracted)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Iron mortar&amp; pestle, heating device; iron <em>kadhai<\/em>, ladle, pyrometer, weighing balance.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>At first <em>Swarna Makshika<\/em> was made into powder by iron mortar &amp; pestle and taken in a clean and dry iron <em>kadhai <\/em>(pan), heated on the charcoal furnace at about a temperature of 850<sup>0<\/sup>c-900<sup>0<\/sup>c with frequent addition of lemon juice.<\/p>\n<p>During the process an iron plate was covered over the iron <em>kadhai <\/em>to avoid the loss of material due to dusting. This process was carried out till cessation of sulphur fumes and appearance of red colour in the material.<\/p>\n<p>The above procedure was carried out for three days.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>During the heating of <em>Swarna Makshika<\/em>, fumes of sulphur odor was observed.<\/p>\n<p>During the addition of lemon juice to the heating iron <em>kadhai, <\/em>containing <em>Swarna Makshika <\/em>dusting of the material was observed.<\/p>\n<p>Initially the colour of <em>Swarna Makshika<\/em> was observed greenish black that gradually become purple and finally reddish brown colour was observed after completion of the process.<\/p>\n<p>Total duration of 3days was required for completion of <em>shodhana<\/em> After completion of the process loss in weight of raw material was observed.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>M<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>rana<\/em><\/strong><strong> of <em>Swarna M<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>a<\/em><\/strong><strong><em>kshika<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Principle<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Puta <\/em>system of heating with 04 kg. Cow dung cake.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials and Methods<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Raw materials<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Suddha Swarna Makshika<\/em> (prepared in the above stated process).<\/p>\n<p>Lemon juice q.s. (lemon is procured from the market and juice is extracted)<\/p>\n<p><strong>Equipments<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Stone mortar with pestle, spatula, earthen casseroles (<em>sarava<\/em>), rag &amp; mud (<em>kapad miti<\/em>), cow dung cake, puta system of heating, pyrometer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Method<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The whole process of <em>marana<\/em> is completed in following sub steps, those have very significant role towards the quality of finished product.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Bhavana<\/em><\/strong><strong> (Wet Trituration)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Accurately weighed <em>suddha swarna makshika<\/em> powder was taken into a clean and dry stone mortar. Then freshly prepared lemon juice was poured into the mortar (<em>khalva<\/em>), till it causes complete dipping of all the material in the mortar (<em>khalva<\/em>).<\/p>\n<p>Continuous trituration was done by adding lemon juice when required, till the paste formed become sufficiently smooth and features of proper <em>bhavana<\/em> were observed. The same procedure was executed for each firing till the desired quality of <em>bhasma<\/em> is achieved.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pelletisation<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After completion of the <em>bhavana<\/em> process the paste thus formed is subjected to pelletisation. In this step pellets of uniform size and thickness were prepared and dried in sun shine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sarava Samputikarana<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Properly dried, weighed, pellets were arranged inside the <em>sarsva<\/em> so as to facilitate proper distribution of heat to all the pellets.<\/p>\n<p>Then another <em>sarava <\/em>was covered over it so as to fit perfectly by mouth to mouth, then the joint was sealed by turning the <em>kapad miti<\/em> for seven times and dried in sun shine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Puta <\/em><\/strong><strong>system of heating<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Properly sealed and dried <em>samputa<\/em> was subjected to <em>puta<\/em> system of heating with four kg cow dung cake in each time.<\/p>\n<p>During heating in <em>puta<\/em> system the dried <em>samputa<\/em> containing pellets was kept in between the cow dung cakes and cow dung cakes were arranged properly so that the uniform heat could be provided to the <em>samputa<\/em> from all corner.<\/p>\n<p>Pyrometer was set at the base of the <em>samputa<\/em> to record the temperature pattern during the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Observations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The white fume with sulphur odor was observed during the early firings.<\/p>\n<p>Gradually flame was appeared and reached around 1ft high, then slowly declined.<\/p>\n<p>Temperature pattern was recorded through the pyrometer; on every15 min. 980<sup>0<\/sup>C was observed the highest peak temperature and was retained for about 05 min.<\/p>\n<p>Initial greenish-black pellets were turned to brownish-black after 3<sup>rd<\/sup> <em>puta, <\/em>from 3<sup>rd<\/sup> to 8<sup>th<\/sup> <em>puta <\/em>colour of product was observed blackish-brown and testing parameters did not sustain.<\/p>\n<p>After 11<sup>th<\/sup> firing the colour of the product was observed Reddish brown and found competent with all the <em>bhasma parikshya<\/em> including <em>amla parikshya<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>After completion of the process finally weight gain was observed.<\/p>\n<table style=\"width: 70%;\" border=\"1\" cellpadding=\"5\">\n<tbody>\n<tr>\n<td>\u00a0<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-12720\" src=\"https:\/\/biomedpharmajournal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/vol_3_No1_Anci_Sudh_fig1-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"Figure 1\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" srcset=\"https:\/\/biomedpharmajournal.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/vol_3_No1_Anci_Sudh_fig1-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/biomedpharmajournal.org\/staging\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/vol_3_No1_Anci_Sudh_fig1.jpg 685w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 150px) 100vw, 150px\" \/><\/td>\n<td>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Figure 1<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/biomedpharmajournal.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/vol_3_No1_Anci_Sudh_fig1.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">Click here to View figure<\/a><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p><strong>\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Table 1: Showing Temperature pattern Observed in Puta System of Heating,\u00a0 for 4 kg. It was observed that the <em>bhasma<\/em> enters into the lines of the finger which was not easily cleansed out from the cleavage of finger lines. It signifies the smaller particle size of <em>bhasma<\/em> even if in the nano-range.<\/p>\n<p><em>Varitaratavam<\/em>: Small amount of the prepared <em>bhasma<\/em> was taken and sprinkled over the silent water taken into a beaker. It was found that the <em>bhasma<\/em> particles float over the surface of the water. It indicates the lightness of bhasma.<\/p>\n<p><em>Uttama<\/em>: The prepared <em>bhasma<\/em> was found to with stand on floating on water surface when one rice particle was placed over it. It confirms the very lightness of bhasma<\/p>\n<p><em>Nisvadutvam<\/em>: The prepared <em>bhasma<\/em> was found tasteless when a small amount was kept over the tongue. This test signifies the tastelessness of bhasma and facilitates its palatability for all.<\/p>\n<p><em>Dantagre na kach kacha iti<\/em>: When a small amount of the <em>bhasma<\/em> was placed between the teeth, no any sandy feeling was appreciated. This test proves the smoothness of the <em>bhasma<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Nischandratvam: <\/em>The prepared bhasma must have loss of shinning and metallic luster even on observing through magnifying glass. This indicates absence of free metal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Amla Parikshya<\/em>: A pinch of prepared <em>bhasma<\/em> was mixed with little amount <em>dadhi<\/em> (curd) taken in a clean and dry Petridis, kept for 24h. and then observed for any colour change. No colour change of <em>dadhi <\/em>(curd) was observed. The same procedure was followed with lemon juice taken in a test tube and same observation was found. This test confirms absence of free metal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Avami<\/em>: Intake of small amount of the <em>bhasma<\/em> prepared did not produce any nausea \/ vomiting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Specific Taste with Lemon juice and curd<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As one of the composition of raw material is copper, the prepared bhasma was subjected to lemon juice and curd taste. It was found that after mixing prepared bhasma with both lemon juice and curd intimately there was no colour change observed both in short term as well as long term reaction indicates bhasma prepared properly.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Discussion<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Literatures of Rasa Shastra are enriched with pharmaceutical processing techniques of metals and minerals. Amongst different processing techniques like roasting, heating and quenching, pounding etc. roasting with lemon juice is found suitable for <em>swarna makshika<\/em><em> shodhana.<\/em> For <em>marana<\/em> 04 kg. cow dung cake as fuel is found suitable for preparation of its bhasma in a total of 11 number of firings (<em>putas)<\/em>.\u00a0 The quality controls of metallic <em>bhasmas<\/em> are well defined in ancient texts and cover all the aspects of its internal administration so far as safety and efficacy is concerned. The assessments are based on naked eye observation but these are very minute and close surveillance to confirm the quality of <em>bhasma<\/em>.
